The good thing about dark backgrounds is that you don't get distracting shadows. The other good thing is that you don't get distractions. Your eye is only drawn to the person in the photo.The simplest pose is with the body at a slight angle. I think most people face the camera when asked for their photo but the angle gives a third dimension to the image. On the right you don't need to tell people to stand at a slight angle when there are two together. The natural stance here is to be standing slightly towards each other.
